The editor has visited each of these sites-- the comments are mine alone. If you have comments or reviews you would like added-- send them along!! Historical Maps of Long Island
A collection of clear, very interesting historical maps of Long Island, dating back to the 17th Century, with an emphasis on the mapping of Long Island, 1873. "Oceanside" appears on maps of Hempstead South, Rockville Centre and Pearsall's Corner (remember Oceanside was Christian Hook and Parsonage Corner back then). Note the naming of property owners, but not streets!
Nassau County History Site
Read old newspapers, see what happened in 1679 when Mr. Spratt claimed Mr. Shephard owed him money for the purchase of "one cloak, £3, two bottles of rum, ten yards of Ozenbrigs and one hat"; find out which of our neighbors supported the British and had to flee to Nova Scotia in 1776. Fun, interesting and quirky.
Lynbrook Historical Society
Well-constructed, informative site of our neighbors - remember that much of early history centered on the town of Hempstead-- this site gives insight as well as information.
Long Beach Historical Society
Site of the Historical Society of our neighbors to the South--once part of our school district. Not much historical detail on the site, but it does contain postings of remembrances and gives you contacts to the Society.
Baldwin Historical Society
Very informative site-- filled with first-hand accounts of life in early Baldwin. Many items overlap with Oceanside (such as the trolley, the Jamaica-Merrick Plank Road, and many others). Nice site, well worth the look.

New York State History

New York State History Net
Interesting New York history site. Contains resources for teachers and students (and all history buffs). Extensive links to historical societies, extensive resources for research. Site to contain the Encyclopedia of NY State history in 2002.

United States History

Early American Archives
A delicious, interesting, rich site. Its main focus is primary source material from 18th Century America-- all displayed digitally. A unique array of original newspapers, maps and writings come to life on your screen just as they appeared to our forebears more than 200 years ago. Original movies, articles, message boards & much more!  How about trying their interactive crossword puzzle? Simply a must.
This Nation
It bills itself as the most comprehensive U.S. government & political site on the web, and it may very well be. The textbook is by pay only, but there is so much free material you won't miss it. Historical documents are transcribed here-- the Declaration of Independence, war proclamations, every inaugral address, speeches, songs-- on & on. Tests for students, material for teachers. A treasure trove. Researchers-- start here. Curious about American history? Dip in here, but be prepared to be sucked in for a bit!
The History Net
If you are a history buff, this is it, especially for world and national history. Links to the National History Day web site, including the annual contests.
The National Archives
The home page for the National Archives research resources in Washington, D.C. Excellent research site. Access the Archives main page for glossy pictures, etc.
Library of Congress History Site
A simply wonderful site filled with history, music, photographs and lots of fun stuff-- designed for kids, but well worth an adult's visit. A dip into American history, brought to us by the Librarian of Congress

White House Historical Association
An extensive, well-documented history of the White House & the people who have lived in it. A very detailed, but easily readable, history of the U.S. weaves throughout. Great source for teachers & students. The Learning Center is set up in grade-appropriate groups. A must-see!!

Site of the Independence Hall Association of Philadelphis, this site connects with fun and informative sites on Ben Franklin, the Revolutionary Congresses, Valley Forge, Betsy Ross & much more. Contains virtual tours of many historical sites. Fun--take a look!
About.com's U.S. History
Commercial site with nice century-based overviews, plus in depth outlines/articles on specific topics. I found it to be a bit too cluttered for my taste, but it is information rich and a good source for students. Just watch the casino ads.
Civil War Homepage
Central site, good starting point for research on the Civil War. Built-in links lead you by category to primary and secondary source material. Maintained by the Assistant Director, Distance Education and Independent Study, of the University of Tennessee.

Smithsonian Museum of American History
Virtual tours are the key component. Site puts the artifacts in historical perspective. The Star Spangled Banner, thomas Edison, the Sweat Shops, Thomas Jefferson's wines...How can you resist?

The History Place
Covers U.S. history mainly in timeline format. Contains a nice "in their own words" section, and reviews of many U.S. history-related movies (though it's thumbs-down for most!)

Global & General History
eHistory
Good, basic site. Initially it only covered the Civil War, but now it includes WWII, Vietnam & World history. Uneven at points, a bit wordy in others. Still an overall good site.
The History Channel
If they have your topic, it's a home run! It is the web site for the TV channel, so there are lots of commercials & ads-- but can be an excellent resource. Best- recordings of speeches. Worst-- lots of clicking, a bit too cluttered for my taste.
