Oceanside Comes Together:
COMMUNITY UNITY
The brainchild of The Oceanside Public Schools Department of Community Activities and Oceanside Community Service, COMMUNITY UNITY was established in 2005 in response to the devastating after-effects of Hurricane Katrina. Its mission at the time was to raise money and collect goods to send to those affected by this natural disaster. COMMUNITY UNITY grew to become the “out of town” arm of Community Service, Inc.
This past May, COMMUNITY UNITY raised thousands of dollars through its “Shake Rattle & Roll” Doo Wop Concert. Oceanside strolled, lindied and twisted to the songs of Vito Piccone and the Elegants, Frankie Lymon’s “Legendary” Teenagers (featuring B-103’s Bobby J), The Del-Vikings and Mr. Palisades Park himself - Freddie “Boom Boom” Cannon.
For Lincoln’s Birthday, COMMUNITY UNITY taught our school children “The Power of the Penny” by collecting all those pesky brown coins and donating the proceeds to Community Service to help those less fortunate in the community. Then our own Senator Dean Skelos arranged for a Grant for COMMUNITY UNITY to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) for all outside playgrounds to protect the kids – as well as their parents and grandparents - in the event of a cardiac emergency when schools are not open.
The COMMUNITY UNITY Committee elected to become part of Community Service, Inc. and OCS was pleased and proud to partner with this fine, dedicated and caring group. In so doing, we feel we have now threaded the needle that sews everyone in this great community together. Virtually all groups represented in the directory have a member or two who is part of this new and vital organization. Community businesses, sports teams, fraternal and religious organizations -- any community-minded citizen -- all are encouraged to join in the UNITY!
When there is a specific need or improvement from which the entire community would benefit and grow – COMMUNITY UNITY will be there to raise the funds and community awareness to make that need a reality. Come join us! For further information call Bob Transom at (516) 594-0748.
