What does Oceanside Community Service do?

OCS was organized in 1949 to act as a coordinating agency and clearinghouse for the needy and homebound of Oceanside. Over the years, and through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, the following tasks have been undertaken:

∙ Periodically visiting the aged, homebound and those in need

to determine their needs.

∙ Maintaining an up-to-date list of families in need of clothing,

medical assistance, food or fuel, as well as supplying same or

locating an agency to do so.

∙ Supplying food to the pantry at St. Anthony’s & St. Christopher's.

∙ Securing medical equipment and assistance, as well as

special transportation for those in need of medical treatment.

∙ Directing families and individuals to proper agencies

for legal and family counseling

∙ Sponsoring Holiday programs (Easter, Passover,

Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas.)

∙ Acting as liaison to many County agencies.

∙ Publishing and distributing an updated Community

Organization Directory on a yearly basis.

OCS strives to be the liaison between you and those in need in the community. Your continued support, contributions and active participation are needed to help us achieve our goals.

Oceanside Community Service was organized, through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, to act as a coordinating agency and clearing house for the needy and the homebound of Oceanside. Our community’s continued support, contributions and active participation help OCS to achieve its goals.

The Oceanside Department of Community Activities offers something for everyone, from pre-school children through senior citizens. There are health and self-improvement courses, programs for children with disabilities, holiday celebrations and community-wide service projects which build community spirit and cooperation, helping to make Oceanside a special place to live.

Oceanside Community Service and the Department of Community Activities joined forces this Spring to host a "SHAKE, RATTLE & ROLL" Doo-Wop Concert on Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 pm in the Oceanside High School Auditorium. The evening featured hit music from the 50’s and 60’s by FREDDY "Boom Boom" CANNON, VITO PICCONE and The ELEGANTS, FRANKIE LYMON'S "Legendary" TEENAGERS, The DEL-VIKINGS and CLEVELAND STILL and The Dubs. It was truly a night to remember, as we sang along and danced in the aisles to the music that will live forever!

WHEN TURKEYS FLY… IT’S TIME TO GET INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY GIVING!

When turkeys fly, you know it’s Turkey Shoot time! It happens this time every year: Anyone passing Oceanside High School on Tuesday morning, Nov 23, would have witnessed hundreds of frozen turkeys “flying” out of the back of a pick-up truck into Thanksgiving baskets assembled and staged in the front lobby by OHS students.

This year, more than 200 decorated Thanksgiving dinner baskets, sponsored by every OHS Department and Club, were delivered by students and community volunteer drivers to local families in need.

The Elementary and Middle schools joined in the giving by providing canned goods for the Turkey Shoot. All donated food was transported to OCS Pantry at School 6 where it was sorted by student volunteers for additional food baskets. This year, the schools also initiated a turkey donation campaign dubbed “The Turkey Hunt.” A friendly inter-school rivalry netted over 50 turkeys that took flight on Turkey Shoot Tuesday. Additional turkeys were also donated by The Oceanside Federation of Teachers and community members.

The Turkey Shoot, spearheaded by OHS Director of Student Activities, Julia Nappi, is just one of many community outreach projects coordinated by Oceanside Community Service, Inc. And the Holiday Season is this all-volunteer organization’s busiest time of year. The spirit of the season brings even deeper meaning to the OCS motto: “You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”

With Thanksgiving behind them, OCS volunteers are now gearing up to make the Season brighter for those who have fallen on hard times. Canned goods to fill Holiday baskets will continue to be collected at all schools as toy donations begin for the Oceanside Federation of Teachers Holiday Toy Drive.

Community members wishing to donate non-perishable foods, toys or Kohl’s gift cards (for older children) can drop them at Home and Hearth Real Estate, 230 Merrick Road, Oceanside, seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm. Monetary contributions can be sent to: “Oceanside Community Service”, PO Box 203, Oceanside, NY 11572

Every member of the community can get involved in the Giving! While monetary contributions are always welcome and greatly needed, you can also donate the valuable gift of your time. Volunteers are needed for the Toy Wrap, Wednesday, December 15, in the School 6 cafeteria starting at 6:30 pm. While not necessary, it’s helpful to bring along scissors, tape and wrapping paper! Holiday food baskets filled by School District Administrators - along with bags of toys - will be delivered Saturday, December 18 from School 6 starting at 10 am. Volunteer drivers are needed.
