The initial development phase to convert the old School #1 property into Schoolhouse Green began with Groundbreaking on October 12, 2000. Since that date, the property has been transformed from an abandoned school site into what has increasingly becoming a vital, living center of the Oceanside community.
Phase One of development included removal of old
asphalt and dead trees. A grant arranged through
propelled the project forward!
Phase Two of the construction involved adding topsoil, installing irrigation, leveling and seeding. Fencing was

added to the property with the help of numerous able- bodied community volunteers including Steve Kriss, Bobby Schloth, Keith Pearsall, Tony Iovini and Bob Transom!

Schoolhouse Green continues to emerge as a

central area where our community can congregate,

mingle and relax. On September 11, 2002, it served

as a place for the community to gather, grieve and

remember at a commemorative service and dedication

of a 9/11 Memorial Garden. Each year, the Boy Scouts
Community members and organizations have planted trees for special occasions or to remember deceased relatives and friends. Visit Trees...planted with love.
In Spring, 2002, The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce inaugurated its first Country Crafts Fair on the Green. The Fair is held each Spring and Fall. The next Fair will be Saturday, June 25, 2005. The Department of Community Activities holds many of its events on the Green - including the Halloween Happening.
The completed site will include a 19th Century schoolhouse and
gallery structure to display the history of Oceanside. Oceanside
High graduate, Robert Iger, made a generous donation toward
this project.
The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Country Craft Fair came to the Green on Saturday, June 25! The weather was gorgeous and a good time was had by all! For some photos, CLICK HERE.
