In the Fall of 2008, The Oceanside Garden Club undertook the planting of the

borders around the gazebo at Schoolhouse Green.  Come spring and summer,

visitors will be able to enjoy the pastel colored perennial flowers typical of a

cottage garden.  Look for  Endless Summer blue hydrangeas, purple lythrum, pink veronica, irises, white astilbe, and other pink, blue and purple flowers.  The project was planned and planted by Roellyn Armstrong, a Master Gardener,  Oceanside resident and volunteer at Clark Botanic Gardens in Albertson.

Roellyn is currently a co-vice president of the Oceanside Garden Club, a member of the Long Island Horticultural Society and was a volunteer greenhouse gardener at Old Westbury Gardens.  Formerly a high school French and Spanish teacher and teachers’ association president in the East Meadow School District, Roellyn also served as the district’s teacher

center director and coordinator for the thirty-nine teacher centers on Long Island.  Having been on the Board of Directors of New York State United Teachers representing southwestern Nassau teacher locals, Roellyn retired from public education to work in the school of education at Adelphi University with pre-service teachers and continues as a literacy coach at Literacy Nassau.
